Getting to the Source… The Admiral Theatre’s new club-like venue

The Admiral Theatre’s new space hosts Seattle band The Senate July 24.

Walking into the grand auditorium of the Admiral Theatre is an impressive experience.

The towering ceilings and commanding center stage, the art deco accents and boisterous showroom floor all make for a stunning sight. While the sheer size of the 800-capacity concert hall makes most any performance a main stage event.

Now the Admiral has a second stage.

“Ruth (Enderle, Admiral Executive Director) and I go to New York every year,” Admiral General Manager Brian Johnson said. “And we always see these great performances in these funky little rooms. And we were thinking, you know, we have this little space…”

Inspired by those funky little rooms in the city, the Admiral’s new space — which was once just a meeting room — has been renovated into a lower capacity venue called The Source.

It’s got the feel of a low-lit, high-class jazz club of sorts, though Johnson said its not explicitly, or specifically, intended for jazz. He hopes it’ll become a space for a younger crowd.

This weekend, Seattle-based purveyors of “face-melting acoustic riffage” The Senate — a string band that’s been rumored to turn coffee shops into dance parties — play at 7 p.m. July 24. Tickets are $20.

It’s The Source’s second official show. Susan Werner christened the space in March. The Senate show is one of three the Admiral has slated in the new venue during the second half of summer.

“Then we start booking for fall,” Johnson said. “We’ll probably do one show a month in here — one show that we book, the touring type of show.”

The space, lcoated on the 5th Street side of the Admiral, is also available for anyone looking to rent it out as a performance space, banquet hall or meeting room. It goes at a base rate of $250 (just for the room).

“As you can see the stage is kind of small,” Johnson said of the 8-foot-by-12-foot platform in the front of the room. “But we can do anything that fits on there.”
