KINGSTON — The Buccaneers soccer team kicked its season off with a message: We may be new, but we can play.

On Saturday in their season opener the Bucs played last year’s top 2A Olympic League school, Sequim High School, and didn’t let the Wolves get a bite.

The teams broke even, 0-0, but Kingston posted more shots on goal than the, Wolves 9-5.

“It was a good game for our first ever,” coach Craig Smith wrote in an e-mail. “I was pleasantly surprised at the effort and desire we showed.”

The combined force of seniors, goalie Devin Langaker, and center back John Troka, junior forwards Bobby Catania and Erick Ramirez and rookie freshman Juan Ramirez, led to the shutout.

The Bucs applied pressure to the Sequim defense and didn’t allow the Wolves to play any solid balls from deep in the field.

“Something very positive to build on was developed today,” Smith said. “I’m glad Kingston High School was built to give these hard working kids a chance to prove themselves.”

In its first week of competition the Bus will have numerous opportunities to prove itself. The teams plays three more games in the next six days, the first of which came Tuesday.

With a confidence building start in the record book, the Bucs traveled to Silverdale Stadium and played Olympic League competitors the Klahowya Eagles.

The Bucs continue on the road to Port Townsend on Thursday and then it’s home to Buccaneer field on Saturday to face off against Port Angeles High School at 1:45.
