The Bremerton Knights wrestling squad represented itself well at the 3A Olympic League Sub-Regional Meet last Saturday, sending 10 Knights on to regionals from the meet BHS hosted.

“We wrestled really well,” Bremerton coach Jeff Barton said.

Four Knights make the trip to Yelm High School as alternates.

Aside from moving too quickly at some points, stalling matches as wrestlers have to have an allotted amount of time between matches, everything ran smoothly.

“The tournament really ran well,” Barton said.

On the mats, Bremerton’s Jordan Hernandez-Jones won at 119 pounds, when Olympic’s Brandon Truini had to injury default the final.

189er Andres Garcia overcame a week of adversity to win his weight as well.

“And he’s been sick,” Barton said. “He had a death in the family. He didn’t get much sleep. That’s a tough kid.”

Billy Richardson was a finalist at 112, but fell in a hard-fought battle with Oly rival Jesse Borcherding, whom Richardson beat 6-5 in their previous meeting. This time, Borcherding took a 5-3 decision after Richardson nearly scored a two-point nearfall.

“Billy wrestled a little too tentatively,” he said. “Jesse and Billy almost know each other too well.”

But no effort highlighted the day for the Knights like Glenn Calnan’s at 171. Trailing 10-6 with just more than a minute left, Calnan caught Peninsula’s Shay Davidson for a pin — and third place.

“That’s exciting,” Barton said. “He wrestled the tournament of his life. He had that no-quit attitude the whole time. For me, that’s what this is all about.”

Andrew Beliveau (119), Cody King (125), Mark Ebbay (130), Grant Clarridge (140) and Michael Aguada (215) all advance while Bobby Dingle (103), Nick Sebastical (112), Tommy Hanberg (145) and Chris Fleming (152) are all alternates.

103er Lauren Richardson won the girls 103 title at Fife High School as well.
