Poulsbo Piranha Swim Team performs strongly at March Madness Meet

Although facing some stiff competition, the Poulsbo Piranhas delivered a strong performance in their first day, taking home 16 first-place ribbons.

SILVERDALE — The Poulsbo Piranha Swim Team registered 41 of its athletes for the two-day March Madness swim meet on March 5 at Olympic High School in Bremerton.

Although facing some stiff competition from 12 teams, the Poulsbo Piranhas delivered a strong performance in their first day, taking home 16 first-place ribbons.

Girls 12 and younger had the strongest showing in the morning. Brianna Hoffman received two first-place ribbons in the 11/12 age group — one in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.99 and the other in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.12. Ava Harris earned top honors in the same age group in the 50-yard butterfly with a winning time of 28.94.

In the girls 9/10 age group, Tiffany Le won the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 41.43.

In the 8 and younger age group, Jean Ritchie Reinhardt won the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 48.73 and Shoshanna McLain won the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 8:11.57. The only boy to receive a first-place ribbon in the morning session was 7-year-old Joshua VanHuis, who mastered the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 10:08.06.

Tables turned in the second session of the day as the girls won only one event and the boys dominated the rest, winning eight blue ribbons.

In the boys 11 and older age group, the 200-yard medley team of Tim Gallagher, Alex Stefanski, Jeremiah Johnston and Josiah Johnston took first place with a time of 1:47.82. In the 11/12 age group, Isaac Beers and James Correll swam to blue ribbons — Beers in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.45, and Correll in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.84.

The boys 13 and 14-year-old age group claimed four first-place finishes; Tim Gallagher won three of the four besting the competition with a time of 56.13 in the 100-yard backstroke, 51.66 in the 100-yard freestyle, and 5:02.74 in the 500-yard freestyle. Alex Stefanski won the fourth blue ribbon with a time of 2:21.48 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Jeremiah Johnston won first place in the 15 and over age group, with his 1.02.62 time in the 100 backstroke. The last first place finish of the day for the team was by Halle Johnston in the 1000-yard freestyle race with her time of 12:35.85.

Numerous other swimmers received ribbons for placing in the top eight in the swimming events.

As day two of the event opened at 9 a.m., the Poulsbo Piranha Swim Team won nine events over the course of the day.

Two swimmers brought four first-place ribbons to the Piranha team in the morning session.

Isabel Hendryx won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.13 and with a time of 25.66 won the 50-yard freestyle. Tim Gallagher continued his success collecting wins in the 100-yard butterfly (earning top honors) with a time of 56:30 and the 50-yard freestyle with a time of his 23.42 seconds.

In the afternoon session, with times of 1:39.38 and 2:38.63 respectively, Shoshanna McLain and Joshua VanHuis won first-place ribbons in the eight and under age groups for the 100-yard butterfly.

In the boys age 9/10 100-yard butterfly, Gage Hendryx won with a time of 1:24.06. In the boys age 11/12 200-yard backstroke, Isaac Beers won with a time of 2:23.37. The boys 12 and younger 200-yard freestyle relay team of James Correll, Gage Hendryx, Ian Stefanski, Isaac Beers won the final blue ribbon of the day for the Piranha team with a time of 1:56.60.

The team’s next meet is the Senior Sectionals on March 17-20 at the King County Aquatic Center.
