Using the Kitsap County Herald as its primary resource, the Friends of Poulsbo History, dedicated members of the Poulsbo Historical Society, gave birth Dec. 16 to a six-pound bundle of joy, “The Spirit of Poulsbo.” With its revelatory research, imaginistic writing, and stunning graphic arts by Poulsbo company, Fusion Creative Works, this book will be a source of community pride for many years to come. By rights, its publication should have been celebrated with fireworks funded by The Herald.

However, instead of Friends being lauded by The Herald, there has been no press coverage of the release at all, except for a small notice buried at the bottom of page four early in December and in two letters to the editor. Peter Iverson, founding editor of The Herald, would not be pleased. The Friends of Poulsbo History deserve better than editorial silence. They are: Donna Jean Bruce, Judy Driscoll, Hildur Gleason, Megan Holmberg, Soon Hood, Ellen Jordal, Roseann Mitchell, Erica Varga, Arlene Watland Fureby, Sherry White, and Muriel Williams. The Friends hope the Poulsbo Historical Society will use profits from the book to help fund a permanent home for local history and artifacts.

“The Spirit of Poulsbo” may be purchased at the Book Stop in downtown Poulsbo, and the Friends may be thanked wherever and whenever you encounter them.
