Mayoral race: Erickson is a fiscally conservative leader

This letter is written in support of Becky Erickson. For about one year I served as a volunteer worker at North Kitsap Fishline. For that entire period of time I was unaware that Erickson served on the board and was a strong financial supporter of the organization. This was all done privately behind the scenes.

Naturally when I heard that Erickson had announced her intention to run for mayor, it pleased me greatly. Clearly her motive for running for mayor was not due to personal financial gain. Later, when I attempted to make a financial contribution to her campaign, she declined. The reasons for that action should be self-evident to all the residents of Poulsbo. This was the first illustration of a fiscally conservative leader leading by example.

There are those who would say that Poulsbo is on strong financial footing and then point to its AA Bond rating. However, for those of you who listened to (the Oct.21) council meeting, a new picture emerges. There are significant cracks in the city’s financial foundation. For example, the sinkhole at the downtown pavilion created an unfunded liability of unknown proportions. An initial estimate for the fix was in excess of $75,000, but total costs are undetermined. Emergencies are a part of everyday life of city. That is why a healthy reserve cushion is necessary and essential. Our grand city hall building has strained that cushion to the limit.

If this election for mayor has you on the fence, please consider the only fiscally conservative candidate, Erickson.
