During the cold-weather snap a few months back, we took this space to express our dissatisfaction with the lack of a cold-weather shelter here in North Kitsap. We lamented that those in need were literally being left out in the cold in freezing weather conditions.

How, we wondered, would those with limited resources get to Bremerton to seek shelter from the cold? Now we don’t have to wonder anymore.

Homeless advocates banded together in January, jumped through the proper hoops, and opened a severe weather shelter at Poulsbo’s First Lutheran Church. No one took advantage of the shelter on Monday or Tuesday but that doesn’t mean the need does not exist. It likely means word didn’t spread fast enough.

That so many were willing to devote time and energy to help others — and to make it happen so fast — restores our faith in humanity. First Lutheran and North Kitsap Fishline took the lead on this effort, recruiting a wealth of volunteers willing to work behind the scenes to set it up and volunteer for shifts to operate the shelter.

The volunteers worked with the Department of Emergency Management to get the shelter up and running.

To everyone who pitched in, we offer a kudo and a job well done.

The shelter will be activated again if the temperature drops below freezing for more than four hours.
