POULSBO — OK, here’s a question that many North Kitsap students are asking about the week ahead:

Sledding or studies?

According to the National Weather Service, there may not be enough snowfall overnight to force a school closure or delayed start on Tuesday. So, studies it is.

But the rest of the week? Here’s what the National Weather Service is forecasting. (Check the North Kitsap School District website for school closures and delays.)

Snow showers are expected Monday night after 10, with temperatures steady around 32 and south wind between 3 and 10 mph. Total nighttime snow accumulation of around an inch is expected.

Tuesday, there will be snow showers, with new snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. Temperatures will peak near 31, with north wind between 9 and 11 mph.

Snow is likely Tuesday night, with new snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. Expect low temperature of around 26 and north wind around 11 mph.

Wednesday: Snow, possibly heavy at times with new snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches. Expect a high temperature of 31 with northeast wind between 3 and 7 mph.

Wednesday night, snow is expected before 10 p.m., then rain. The overnight low will be around 27. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Thursday, it will rain, with temperatures near 43. Rain is expected to continue through Monday.

Area is under winter storm watch

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Poulsbo area Monday, recommending that if you must travel, carry an extra flashlight, food, water and blankets in case of emergency.

“An upper level weather system will move across western Washington (Monday) giving locally heavy snow showers to the area,” the storm-watch warning states.

“Cold continental air dropping in from the north will possibly help focus snow shower activity late tonight through Tuesday. The chances for a major winter storm moving into Western Washington late Tuesday night through Wednesday (are) increasing.”

The National Weather Service reported that its winter storm watch remains in effect from midnight PST Monday night through Wednesday evening.

“Snow accumulations are possible tonight through Tuesday as cooler unstable air continues over the area,” the National Weather Service reported. “Local accumulations up to 3 inches are possible. A much more significant winter storm is likely late Tuesday night through Wednesday or Wednesday night. Snow with this system will be widespread and heavy.

“At this time up to 3 inches (of snow accumulation) are possible on Tuesday. Temperatures will remain steady or gradually fall during the afternoon hours so roadways may freeze. A much more significant winter storm is likely late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening. Wednesday’s storm may bring 6 to 14 inches of snow … Extreme travel difficulties are possible.”
