The smell of wings cooking filled the air Sunday morning as the sixth annual Seagull Wings Cook-off got under way.
When the day was over, there was a record number of entries in this year’s May 26 event, according to Coreen Haydock, Chamber of Commerce executive director.
She reported a total of 15 contestants — 11 in the commercial division and four in the amateur division.
Hundreds of wings were created, grilled and served up by both amateur and commercial contestants. Around noon when the bell rung, people lined up with tickets to sauver the delicious creations.
For the third straight year, Steve Sego and Team Sego Seagulls won the amateur division with Pinoy Wings Adobo. Pig’s Revenge/South Kitsap Rotary placed second with their Chicken and Waffle creation, while Chuck’s Voodoo Wings earned Chuck’s Garage Team a third place award.
Moon Dogs, Too Team had to settle for second place this year as Everybody’s American Cookhouse Team took top honors in the commercial division with Spicy Bacon Jam Wings. The second-place finisher was Capricco Cafe and Catering Team with Sexi-Mexi Wings. Moon Dog’s MD’s Very Fine Chinese Wings finished third.
There was a tie for the People’s Choice Award between Wig Wam Pub’s Wingy Wings and Steve Sego and Team Sego Seagulls’ creation.
Also competing in the commercial division were teams from McCloud’s Grill House, Buck’s A&W/Port Orchard Rotary, Blue Goose Tavern, Whiskey Gulch Coffee Co., and Red Dog Saloon.
Judging this year’s cook-off were Fred Chang, Port Orchard City Councilman; Bobbie Stewart, 2011 Small Business of the Year winner; Bernard Jacobson, food and music critic; Tammy Heauser, 2012 Small Business of the Year winner and Rosie Boyer, culinary manager for Suquamish Clearwater Casino and Resort.
