The impeccable strings of Czech Mates

Violin and viola duo, Ron and Roxanna Patterson, set to play the First Sundays Concert Series April 6.

Their playing: extraordinary. Their technique: brilliant. Their musicianship: cream of the crop.

That’s how one reviewer explained the exquisite chamber music enigma that is Duo Patterson, in the wake of their 2004 CD “Czech Mates.” However grandiloquent, the explanation really only scratches the surface.

Ronald Patterson, the violinist of the duo and also Chairman of the Strings Division at the University of Washington School of Music, has a storied history both in concert and in education.

Having concertized extensively throughout the United States and Europe since the age of 11, performing 45 works in more than 150 solo performances, earning critical acclaim from the New York Times, he later served as concertmaster for the Monte-Carlo, Houston, Denver and Miami symphonies, the St. Louis Little Symphony and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. In the mid-1970s, adding to an already impressive musical resume, he founded the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University — which is where Roxanna Patterson studied under him after beginning her professional career at age 16 as part of the Fort Worth Symphony and Opera Orchestras.

In 1979, Ron and Roxanna married and moved to Monte Carlo in the Principality of Monaco, where she traded the violin for the viola and they formed Duo Patterson.

Since, they’ve performed in recitals and as soloists with orchestras around the world. They’ve given world premieres while also having world premieres written for them.

And now, the current Seattlites are coming to Kitsap to play the First Sundays Concert Series at 4 p.m. April 6 at the Bainbridge Commons, 402 Brien Dr. near waterfront park. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 seniors, $10 for students at the door.

Duo Patterson is slated to perform a varied program of classic chamber music including works from Handel, Mozart and Martinu.

You’ll be amazed what they can do with just two sets of strings. WU
