OLALLA — The Summer Solstice Celebration Kirtan is set from 7:30-9:30 p.m. June 20 at the Olalla Community Club, 12970 Olalla Valley Rd.
The Kirtan concert will feature Shantala, joined by musician Sean Frenette and Grammy-winning flautist Steve Gorn.
Shantala, made up of Benjy and Heather Wertheimer, will perform yoga-inspired music with a 21 Century mixture of guitar, tabla, and wind instruments.
Gorn, a Grammy Award winner, will join the duo. He is considered one of the most accomplished bamboo flute players in the world. He performs with a bansuri, a type of Indian flute.
Frenette, a graduate of the New England Conservatory, will perform with Shantala on a variety of string instruments. He also is an accomplished musician and has performed numerous times in Carnegie Hall.
“Kirtan grew out of the Bhakti (yoga of devotion) movement in India, where it continues to flourish,” said Paul King, one of the event coordinators. “In the United States, the enormous popularity of hatha yoga has whetted the American appetite for new, participatory forms of spiritual expression.”
Sean Bonsell is scheduled to perform a light show that will feature a collage of live video and images.
