North Kitsap High School singer Annie Herzog took first place in the solo mezzo soprano division at the Washington Music Educators Association’s State Solo and Ensemble Contest April 24 in Ellensburg. Herzog, a junior, is the first female soloist from North Kitsap to win the state contest.

North Kitsap’s Alex Thompson placed second in the tenor saxophone category at the competition. It is the third time he has placed in the top three at the state contest.

A total of 22 musicians and vocalists from North Kitsap High participated in the state contest, held at Central Washington University.

“I was impressed by all of the students from North Kitsap … because they were confident, well-rehearsed, and gave solid musical performances,” North Kitsap choir teacher Sylvia Cauter said.
