SEATTLE — Andrew Hughes, Democratic candidate for the 1st District seat in Congress in 2012, raised more than $50,000 in the last 30 days, his campaign reports.

The current congressman, Jay Inslee, is running for governor.

Hughes was raised on a 26-acre farm in Poulsbo — he and his wife, Heidi, were married there in August — and now practices law in Seattle.

Hughes has law degrees from Seattle University and University of Washington. He worked for the state Senate’s Energy, Transportation, and Telecommunications Committee on environmental and energy related issues. Additionally, he worked on behalf of children, representing juveniles, through the Defender’s Association; and assisted with efforts to protect children from sexual predators for the Committee for International Human Rights. He has also volunteered at Seattle’s Cleveland High School, teaching courses in practical law.

“I’m not a politician looking to move up, I’m a citizen looking to move us forward. I am running for Congress because we need an innovative approach to the issues of job creation, tax reform, and the neglect of the middle class,” he said in a press release.

“Our government is broken and we need fresh leadership, new ideas and new types of expertise to fix it. We keep electing the same political insiders, the same career politicians, over and over again and expect different results. The only way to change Washington, D.C. is to change the people we send there.”
