POULSBO — A joint meeting between the Poulsbo City Council and North Kitsap School District Board of Directors could have possibly been the shortest public meeting ever.

On May 25, the 7 p.m. meeting at Poulsbo City Hall was called to order and closed in the same minute. The meeting was cut short because of a failure of the school district to properly notify the public.

For its part, the City of Poulsbo sent emails to the media on May 20, and posted the agenda at City Hall, the post office and library, and on the city’s website.

For its part, the school district sent a notice of the meeting at 5:58 p.m. — 1 hour 2 minutes before the meeting — to all of those receiving the NKSD news email.

Public agencies are required by state law to post notice of their meetings so the public can attend, to ensure their deliberations and decisions are made in public.

The lack of notice was due to a “clerical” mistake and it was agreed the proper thing to do was reschedule the joint meeting, Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson said.

The meeting was planned to include topics of mutual interest between NKSD and Poulsbo and will be rescheduled. There is no set date for another meeting.
