Hansville Happenings: Time for the Rummage Sale

If it’s August, it’s time for the Annual Rummage Sale in Hansville. This event is being held this year on the weekend of Aug. 8-9. Take the Hansville Highway, and as you get to the wonderful scenic entrance to our town, you’ll see the signs directing you to the community center at Buck Lake. Saturday the hours are 9 a.m-4 p.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday (and don’t forget Sunday is half-price day.)

This rummage sale always has some wonderful and different offerings. When you come this year you’ll find a model sailing ship (all assembled) that is four feet long and 20 inches high. This will be auctioned off, so put in your bid early. There is also a stand that the wheel was mounted on off the SS Verona — this was part of the Mosquito Fleet in WWII.

And, to add to your home, there is a five-piece set of leather (yes, real leather) light grey furniture: a settee, chairs and a couch. And how about adding a round glass-topped table to this and some look-alike Tiffany-style table lamps and a couple of cozy quilts for your bed.

In the toy department you’ll find a large fire engine. Not quite big enough for your toddler to sit on, but big.

Need a new lawnmower? Well, the ones here aren’t exactly new but you can depend on the fact that they run. Our wonderful staff of “testers” have seen to that. And once you get the lawn mowed, you’ll probably want to add some garden art. We have that too.

And just so you know, there will be a book department. It won’t be as large as the two book sales the Hansville Community Center has every year (fall and spring), but come look. Some very current novel favorites are just waiting for you.

You’ll also find some computers that are not analog, but they are perfectly fine for those games the kids love to play, and this year we have a few computer printers (and yes, checked out by our testers too). Don’t forget to look at the TV games.

Now that I have you just dying to come to the Hansville Community Center rummage sale, let me tell you a few inside stories.

It’s not unusual for people to retire and then (especially women) decide to give their work clothes to the rummage sale. Those power suits and blouses and those almost new shoes and the purses that go to work every day and match certain outfits — well, these don’t sell as well as other clothing here in Kitsap County so some of these donations are given to the ALIVE program through the YWCA in Bremerton. They outfit women going back into the work place. Such a good cause.

Now have I forgotten to tell you about anything? There will be jewelry, the boutique clothes section, kitchenware, coffee, sodas and hot dogs for sale, and the auctioning off of those special items — so much going on.

I suppose I’ll see many of you there. I’ll be at one of the check-out tables so say hello as you go through. I’ll be looking for you.

P.S. Our Memoir Writing Group here in Hansville starts its workshops again on Sept. 14. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll give you the specifics.
