Two volunteers from the South Kitsap Fire and Rescue were honored at the 91st Annual Washington State Firefighters Association Awards banquet June 7 in Wenatchee.
Volunteer firefighter Ryan Wernet was awarded Volunteer Firefighter of the Year and Support Services Member Debby Oliver was recognized as Support Services Member of the Year.
Each year, WSFFA recognizes four volunteers who have shown outstanding service to their communities. Awards are given for volunteer officers, EMS provider, firefighter and support services member.
Earlier this year, Wernet and Oliver were recognized by winning the South Kitsap Fire and Rescue’s 2013 Awards for Volunteer Firefighter and Support Services Member of the Year, respectively. Their names were submitted to the state firefighters association, where they were once again chosen as the outstanding members in their category.
Fire Commissioner Miche Eslava and Battalion Chief Mike Wernet traveled to Wenatchee and joined the winners at the state firefighter’s awards banquet.
Eslava was pleased to see members of SKFR honored with prestigious awards.
“This just goes to show what great people we have serving the community of South Kitsap,” Eslava said.
Mike Wernet also was proud of the volunteers’ accomplishments, especially his son.
“It was a great night, as both a battalion chief of SKFR and Ryan’s father, to see him recognized for his efforts,” he said. “It was also great and very deserving to see Debby recognized for her dedication and commitment to our community”.
Ryan Wernet was recognized for his enthusiasm — “Expressing joy in each task as I give it my best effort.”
Oliver was recognized for her dependability — “Fulfilling what I consented to do, even if it means unexpected sacrifice.”
Both thanked their mentors for all of their guidance and SKFR for allowing them the opportunity to serve their community.
