Monday’s prep roundup

Football playoffs taking shape

The Olympic football team beat North Kitsap 21-14 on the road Friday to secure a berth to the postseason.

The Trojans (5-3 overall, 3-3 league), who have won three consecutive games, earned the Olympic/Western Cascade League No. 4 seed and will face the No. 1 team from the Greater St. Helens League either Nov. 7 or 8 in the state playoffs preliminary round.

“Our goal at the beginning of each season now is to make the state playoffs,” said interim coach Tim Allbee. “This is our third consecutive year getting into the state preliminary round. As a result, we feel we should be there each year. However, it is our goal this year to go beyond the preliminary round. It is a tall order, but we feel we are playing better now.”

Senior running back Larry Dixon, who broke the West Sound career rushing record Oct. 16, rushed 23 times for 174 yards and two touchdowns, including an 11-yarder that broke a 14-14 tie with less than two minutes remaining.

The GSHL No. 1 team will be determined Friday when Camas and Union square off. Both teams are ranked in the Associated Press state football poll, with Union holding the No. 4 position and Camas No. 9.

It’s been a solid month for the Trojans, who look to win their fourth game in as many tries in the regular-season finale Friday against Bremerton.

“We found out Friday night that, as a team, we are able to overcome adversity,” Allbee said. “It was homecoming for North Kitsap and they were battling with a playoff berth at stake.”

Central Kitsap posted its third consecutive shutout to cruise past Stadium 30-0 at in Narrows League action Friday.

The win gives the Cougars (5-3, 5-2) an opportunity to climb to No. 3 in the Narrows League. To do that, CK must defeat Wilson (6-2, 6-1) on the road in the regular-season finale Friday.

CK would face the Wesco South No. 2 team in the state preliminary round if it secures the Narrows No. 3 seed. Right now, that team is Kamiak (4-4, 4-1). But if the Cougars drop to No. 4 or 5, then they would be forced to face a No. 1-seeded team in prelims.

Klahowya, meanwhile, struggled once again in a 50-20 loss Thursday to Steilacoom. The 20-point output was the highest this season for the Eagles (0-8, 0-5) who have yet to win a game under first-year coach Lyle Prouse.

The team is at Eatonville at 7 p.m. Friday.

Volleyball

Central Kitsap hosts rival Gig Harbor at 6:30 p.m. Monday with an opportunity to win its seventh match in eight tries.

The Lady Cougars (10-3, 7-2) are one game behind Gig (12-1, 8-1) in the race for second-place in the Narrows League and would create a tie for that position with a victory Monday.

In 3A play, Olympic (9-5, 8-2) hosts North Thurston in a loser-out, Olympic/Western Cascade League sub-district match at 7 p.m. Nov. 4. A win would give Olympic the OWL No. 3 seed to districts, which begins Nov. 6 at Auburn Mountainview High School.

The Lady Trojans conclude the regular season Tuesday at Port Angeles.

Girls soccer

All three area teams are postseason bound.

Central Kitsap, coming off a 10-0 win over Foss, opens the Narrows League Tournament in a loser-out game against the same team Tuesday.

A win would propel CK (8-3-4, 5-2-3) to a winner-to-state game against Gig Harbor Wednesday.

Olympic wraps up the regular season against Port Angeles on the road Tuesday. Regardless of the outcome, the Lady Trojans (9-3-3, 7-1-2) host Timberline of the Western Cascade league in a sub-district game at Silverdale Stadium Nov. 3.

In 2A action, Klahowya has clinched a No. 1 seed to the West Central District Tournament and will host a district game Nov. 7.
