HANSVILLE — A double-wide mobile home off Twin Spits Road was destroyed by fire Dec. 5.
Flames were seen licking the branches of tall deciduous trees, and even catching a portion of one fir on fire, according to witnesses.
“The whole roof had flames shooting up,” Pat Link said while North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews continued to douse the remains of the home.
The home’s two occupants, a husband and wife, escaped without injury. One dog was also removed without injury, according to NKF&R spokeswoman Michele Laboda. Another dog and a parakeet have not been located, Laboda said.
There were no injuries to firefighters, Laboda said.
Crews from NKF&R were on the scene within two minutes — a Hansville station is just down the road. However: “The home is a total loss,” Laboda said.
The home owners were not insured. Laboda said. Red Cross is taking care of the couples immediate needs. Neighbors are doing what they can to help out, as well as the Hansville Ladies Aid group, according to Laboda.
The road was still blocked as of noon. Several fire trucks were on scene to prevent flames from spreading.
The married couple were in the home when the fire started. The wife heard a smoke alarm, and, after seeing smoke in a bedroom, began evacuating, according to Laboda.
The two purchased the property between seven and 10 years ago. “This is incredibly hard,” Link said. “This is all they had.”
