North end is ready to rummage

Hansville Rummage Sale is Aug. 9-10 at Buck Lake County Park

HANSVILLE — A house could be completely furnished with the number of items that will be available at the Greater Hansville Area Rummage Sale Aug. 9-10.

That’s because all the items come directly from homes, most of which are in Hansville or Eglon.

“[It] would be in the hundreds,” said Chuck Strahm, Greater Hansville Community Center board president, of the number of truckloads that delivered the rummage sale items to Buck Lake County Park.

Donations are collected almost year-round. That includes scheduled dropoffs March through July.

“The last drop off was the biggest we’ve ever had,” said Lynn Hix, community center board vice president and rummage sale organizer.

The 45th annual rummage sale is organized into more than 10 categories. Items include indoor and outdoor furniture, sporting goods, collectibles, kitchen appliances, and boats. The main hall is dedicated to art, kitchenware, and glass- and tableware. The east room is filled with collectables.

The annex is full of electronics, tools, small appliances and lamps — sorry, no leg lamps like the one in “A Christmas Story.”

There are tents for linens, toys and games, and clothing. The clothing tent includes a fitting room.

An area dedicated to boats is in the center of the rummage area.

There are three large outdoor tents for furniture. Furniture includes rocking chairs, stools, couches, mirrors, headboards and more. Strahm said about 600 price tags were made for furniture items; that may not be enough.

“As far as volume goes … this is the biggest [sale] we’ve ever seen.”

The largest donation came in Aug. 6: a 1973 22-foot Sea Ray and trailer.

“It’s a beautiful boat,” said community center member Fred Nelson.

The boat is one of the biggest donations — if not the biggest — ever made. Large items donated in the past include a pickup truck and camp trailers.

“This is a really big donation,” Nelson said.

Though many of the items could be sold privately, north end residents give to the rummage sale instead. The sale is a fundraiser for the Greater Hansville Community Center. The money goes into the community center’s general fund, which helps cover costs to keep it open and pays for some events.

About 150 volunteers have worked to get the rummage sale ready for the weekend, Strahm said.

Rummage sale hours are Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items will be half price Aug. 10.

All items left over will be given away on Aug. 11, however, there’s not usually a whole lot left, according to Strahm.

Items not taken when the sale ends will be donated to Goodwill.

Parking is free, including a portion of the lawn adjacent to the parking lot. Parking opens at 8 a.m. Parking is also limited, so those looking to get into the sale right away are encouraged to arrive early.
