POULSBO — While it may seem a little quirky that a doctor would open a beauty salon, it actually makes perfect sense.

Poulsbo’s Salon Organics, owned and managed by practicing naturopathic physician Ruth Urand, goes hand-in-hand with the naturopathic medicinal philosophy.

“With the naturopathic medicine approach, we take into account every aspect of life, which includes what you’re putting on your skin and in your hair,” she said.

The salon offers a respite for those who have chemical sensitivity issues, as none of its products have preservatives or additives.

Though her physician’s practice, Sound Naturopathic Clinic, and Salon Organics share a building, they are completely separate. They do, however, share philosophies, as the salon allows Urand to take her holistic medicine approach one step further.

Naturopathic medicine focuses on the whole person and shuns artificial ingredients. The same goes for Salon Organics: the products are all natural and do not harm the hair or skin.

Also, unlike certain shampoos that leave behind a filmy coating on the hair, the products her stylists use — Organic Color Systems and Shear Miracles — leave no residue or ammonia scent to assault the senses, Urand said. The Shear Miracles Web site boasts the products are so pure they are safe to eat.

The lack of ammonia lingering in the air combines with the posh decor — a warm, minty green colors the walls and an overstuffed couch invites customers to wait comfortably — to create a relaxed atmosphere.

Another salon previously occupied the space in the building Urand and her husband own.

She was inspired to start an environmentally friendly salon because she was not aware of one in the area, she said.

“I had this idea that we could open a green salon,” she said.

Once the decision was set, Urand began shopping for a stylist who performs holistic hair care. She found two in Lynda Pinkham and Sara McCluskey, both of whom started in mid-June when Salon Organics opened. Most of Urand’s professional energies go toward the medical practice while she assumes the role of manager for the salon.

Mccluskey derives much of her job satisfaction from her artistic approach to her cutting, styling and coloring hair. She also thinks it’s interesting that the salon shares a building with Urand’s medical practice.

“In this building, we take care of everyone inside and out,” she said.
