MILLER BAY ESTATES — Two adults and two children were staying with family members after their home suffered heavy damage in a fire late Jan. 18.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Poulsbo Fire Department crews were called to the Sunridge Way house at 7:24 p.m. after a neighbor called 911 when he stepped out onto his back porch to see the rear of the adjacent home ablaze. Flames were coming from the back doors, he said.

The first unit arrived on scene in just under eight minutes and reported the structure to be well-involved in fire, NKF&R’s Michele Laboda reported. Crews were challenged by a lack of water; with no hydrants in the immediate area, firefighters’ water supply was limited to 500 gallons in each engine until water tender trucks, carrying thousands of gallons each, arrived several minutes behind the first arriving crews, Laboda reported.

Firefighters had the blaze under control within 30 minutes and protected the neighboring structures from any damage. Crews remained on scene into the evening to chase down remaining hot spots. The occupants told firefighters that they’d left home at about 5:15 p.m. after taking 6- and 9 year-old girls to stay with their grandparents, Laboda reported. The two adults returned home at about 8:15 p.m. to find the firefighters at work.

Although the two-story 1,800-square-foot structure remains standing, it is not habitable and nearly all of the family’s possessions were destroyed. The home is insured, and the Red Cross responded to provide the family with assistance meeting immediate needs.

An investigator from the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office went to the scene. Officials believe that the blaze was accidental, Laboda reported. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
