WSU Kitsap Master Gardeners will be available at seven Kitsap County farmers’ markets this summer to answer questions about plants, pests, and sustainable gardening. Master Gardener volunteers are trained by the Washington State University Kitsap County Extension, and will teach about natural yard care by visiting their information booth at the farmers’ market.

They also have information about rain gardens and the Rain Garden Cost Share program, managed by Kitsap Conservation District. This program provides a free site visit and consultation for those in unincorporated Kitsap. Residents who qualify for the cost-share program may be reimbursed half the cost of installation up to $500. WSU Kitsap Extension’s own Rain Garden Mentor volunteers can assist homeowners in city limits with rain garden advice.

Master Gardeners can provide tips and techniques on growing backyard fruits and vegetables, and selecting the right plant for the right place. They can help identify plants, diagnose plant problems and suggest appropriate plants for our climate.

“Master Gardeners are trained to find the most up to date information on growing fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants based upon University research,” said Colleen Miko, Washington State University Extension’s horticulture educator. “They can help people decide on the right plants for their home, and provide advice on how to take care of them.
