Thunderbird is again featured this month. You can find him in Silverdale at the Silverdale Waterfront Park between the three flag poles. The pictograms on him are reproductions of petroglyphs from Northwest locations.
Our Thunderbird in Arness Park is one of nine located throughout Kitsap County. They are all part of an environmental game developed and played in 1992 and 1993, called “Tracking the Thunderbird.” Each is located at a site on public land and illustrates some aspect of the water cycle.
An illustrated story and clues for finding the location as well as facts or other activities was printed and is available at the libraries throughout the county. Newspapers throughout the county also printed articles about “Tracking the Thunderbird.” One could pay postage and also have the clues mailed if necessary.
The game was to end in April 1993 and evaluations were to be mailed in by April 30. A celebration party was held on May 1 at Central Kitsap High School.
I would love to see the game played again. We will be searching for the tracks ourselves over the next few months.
