SUQUAMISH – Three persons were seriously injured and one person was treated at the scene Aug. 3 after a two-vehicle collision on the 20500 block of Miller Bay Road NE, north of Suquamish.
Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson identified the injured as a 45-year-old man from North Kitsap, airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries; a 59-year-old woman from North Kitsap, transported by aid unit to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton with serious injuries; a 63-year-old woman from North Kitsap, airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries; and a 15-year-old girl from North Kitsap, treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, Suquamish Police Department, North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Poulsbo Fire Department went to the scene of the crash, which was reported at 2:46 p.m.
The 45-year-old man was reportedly the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier; the 59-year-old woman was the driver of a 2001 Dodge Intrepid, and the other two females were her passengers.
“Although the investigation is in its early stages, a preliminary report indicates that the Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling northbound on Miller Bay Road at a high rate of speed,” Wilson reported. “The driver had just fled, approximately 30 seconds earlier, from a vehicle traffic stop which had been conducted by patrol officers with Suquamish Police Department.”
The Dodge Intrepid was traveling southbound on Miller Bay Road. The driver was making a left turn into a driveway on the east side of the roadway when the Cavalier struck her car’s right front passenger door, in what is commonly referred to as a “T-bone” collision.
The 63-year-old passenger was sitting in the right front passenger seat; the girl was seated in the back driver’s side seat, according to Wilson.
“The suspect driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained critical injuries that interfered with his attempt to leave the scene of the collision on foot. Sheriff’s traffic investigators developed probable cause that the driver may have been impaired; they obtained a blood draw from him after immediate first aid was provided by NKF&R crews,” Wilson reported.
The suspect was transported by medic unit to Suquamish Elementary School and from there transported by Airlift Northwest helicopter to Seattle.
The driver of the Dodge Intrepid sustained serious injuries and was taken by a NKF&R aid unit to Harrison Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment, Wilson reported.
The right front passenger also was being transported to the hospital when emergency crews decided to stop at Poulsbo Fire Department’s Station 71 for assistance. A decision was made to call for a second airlift. The woman was transported by a Poulsbo Fire medic unit to Raab Park where she was picked up by helicopter and flown to Seattle.
Miller Bay Road NE was closed to through traffic for approximately four hours.
Wilson asked that persons with information about this crash contact Deputy Dave Green, sheriff’s traffic unit, at 360-337-4634.
