Read Up program underway now
The ever-popular “Read Up: Stop the Summer Slide” program started this week in Silverdale. Families, caregivers and children are encouraged to attend the event to keep reading aloud as part of their summer activities.
Participants will receive a free book along with a story time. Materials are available in English and Spanish. Each 20-minute story time includes simple read-aloud tips. Children from birth through 8 years old are invited to the sessions.
Here is the schedule: July 8 – 31, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:45 a.m. at Brownsville, Cottonwood, Esquire Hills, PineCrest and Woodlands Elementary schools;
July 22 – Aug. 14, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:45 a.m. at Clear Creek, Cougar Valley, Silver Ridge and Silverdale Elementary schools;
July 10 – Aug. 14, Thursdays at noon at Green Mountain Elementary;
July 8 – Aug. 26, Tuesdays at Silverdale Waterfront Park
Class on nature mindfulness set
Mindfulness in Nature, a four-week class where participants will receive guidance in mindfulness skills to help promote deep experience in the gifts of the earth – the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feelings, will begin July 30.
Explore area forests and waters with others and be introduced to practices to awaken the senses and open the heart. No mindfulness experience is required. The class meets four Wednesdays — July 30, Aug. 6, 13 and 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at various locations. Pre-registration is required and the cost is $100 or $125 after July 16. Candidate forums set by League
The League of Women Voters of Kitsap will host free public candidate forums prior to the Aug. 5 primary election. All forums will take place at the Norm Dicks Center, 345 Sixth St., Bremerton. Interested citizens are invited to attend and to bring their questions for the candidates.

KEDA workshop offered July 23
The Kitsap Economic Development Alliance is offering Small Business Finance for Government Contractors.
“Prepping You for Success,” is a free two-hour seminar for small businesses owners who are interested in expanding their business through government contracting. The workshop is from 9 to 11a.m. July 23 in Bremerton. Pre-registration is required.
Seminar topics will include cash flow, cost accounting, customer acquisition, customer care and capacity to grow. Navy security drill slated for July 22
The Navy will be conducting security exercise drills on July 22 at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor waterfront.
Tenant commands and local residents may see or hear exercise activity that will include the use of blank ammunition, noise producing simulators and smoke. Live ammunition will not be used.
The drills help ensure the safety and security of U.S. military resources. Exercises such as these are conducted in realistic environments under realistic circumstances to ensure forces maintain the highest level of proficiency and readiness.
Admirals schedule tryouts for July
The Kitsap Admirals are preparing for their third season this fall and will be holding an open tryout from 1 to 3 p.m. July 12 at their new home gym, the Youth Wellness Campus at 3030 Wheaton Way, Bremerton. The season will kick off Nov. 1 on the road at San Diego then back home to open up Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. against the Vancouver Balloholics in the Youth Wellness Campus.

Kitsap Senior Singles will host a potluck at 1 p.m. on July 20 at 3201 Pine Road N.E. in East Bremerton. The group meets at The Willows on the first floor. Bring a favorite dish to share.
