The state Department of Natural Resources recently announced that it will reopen Camp Spilman and Kammenga, campgrounds in Tahuya State Forest Dec. 1, according to a release from the department.

The forest is located south of Central Kitsap and west of Belfair. The two campgrounds closed in 2009 when budget cuts forced the department to close or reduce services at nearly 40 trailheads, campgrounds and other facilities throughout the state.

Money to reopen the campgrounds became available through the department receiving a grant from the Nonhighway and Off-road Vehicle Activities program and also because of revenue from sales of the Discover Pass. The Discover Pass is a paid vehicle access permit for state parks that was implemented in July.

“Even though the Discover Pass is a new funding source, DNR is on a slow but steady trajectory to restore recreation access,” Mark Mauren, recreation program manager, said in a statement.

In addition to the reopening of the two campgrounds, there will be other upcoming changes to Tahuya State Forest. Beginning Jan. 6, visitors will be able to camp at the Tahuya River Horse Camp on a first-come, first-served basis rather than the department taking reservations for this campground. The horse camp will open for camping at noon each Friday through noon the following Monday. The camp will open at 9 a.m. the Wednesday prior to the holiday and close at noon the following Wednesday for Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend.
