Rain garden grows at Breidablik

Breidablik Elementary would like to thank all of the volunteers who created the beautiful rain garden for our school.

The project was started when Nan Woodman, an author/artist with National Geographic, secured a rain garden grant from the Sierra Club. Jeff Adams, a marine water quality specialist from the Washington Sea Grant, joined Nan to map out the site so that water from the roof would be directed to the garden instead of to a storm drain.

Nathan Cleaver of Cleaver Septic Design volunteered a Saturday to dig out the garden with help from Gail and Phil Davis, Nan and Jeff.

The day the garden was to be planted, the ground was frozen solid Master Gardener volunteers organized by Peg Tillery — Diane Watrous, Carol Haskins, and Elizabeth Cheryl Bosley — joined by Nan, Jeff, and Dr. Davis class of fourth and fifth graders, worked the soil for hours so the plants could go in.

A bridge built by parent John Ramm, and a special rain garden sign designed by Nan, will provide the finishing touches.

We are so grateful to all the people and organizations who gave their time and expertise to create a special learning area for the students at Breidablik.
