Understatement of the week

A sheriff’s deputy was driving northbound on State Highway 3 near the Austin Drive exit in an unmarked vehicle when a white car passed him at a high rate of speed. He determined the car was traveling more than 100 mph and stopped the car near the El Dorado Boulevard overpass.

The deputy had the 36-year-old Silverdale man step out of the vehicle. The deputy noted in his report the man appeared intoxicated.

The deputy asked him why he was driving so fast and told him he was going about 105 mph. The man replied, “That was retarded.”

As the deputy was writing tickets, he heard the dispatcher broadcast a vehicle theft just occurred in Bremerton. The description of the stolen car and suspect matched the vehicle and man he had just stopped.

The man was arrested and booked into jail for motor vehicle theft, DUI and outstanding warrants. His bail is set at $45,000.

When house-

sitters steal

A Central Kitsap man called police Oct. 21 to report three of his wife’s rings were missing from her jewelry box. He told a sheriff’s deputy he believed the rings were taken in July when they were on vacation and had an acquaintance housesit for them.

The 46-year-old man said they asked his wife’s best friend’s sister to look after their home, children and animals while they were out of town and they’d never asked her to housesit before.

The man described the rings and the deputy discovered the 48-year-old Bremerton woman who housesat for the couple had pawned several jewelry items in July at Pawn XChange in Bremerton.

The deputy retrieved one of the rings from the pawn shop Oct. 22 and the wife confirmed it was hers.

The deputy got in touch with the suspect Oct. 29 and she admitted taking the rings. She said she pawned the rings with the intention of getting them back later, but forgot about it.

The woman admitted to stealing and pawning other people’s possessions in the past.

The woman was arrested and booked into jail for second-degree theft. She was later released.

Too old to rumble

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an assault with a knife at an apartment in the 3300 block of Valentine Lane SE in South Kitsap at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26.

A 41-year-old Shelton man told a deputy he came over to the apartment to visit friends when a 53-year-old man began yelling at him, accusing him of touching and hitting on his girlfriend at a past party.

The 41-year-old man denied hitting on the man’s girlfriend and the 53-year-old pulled out a machete and said he wanted to step outside.

The 41-year-old man told the deputy he didn’t want to fight the 53-year-old because he is “so much older than him he would not want to hurt him.”

The 53-year-old man had put the machete in the bed of his pickup truck and the victim confirmed that was the knife.

The 53-year-old man was arrested and booked into jail for second-degree assault. His bail is set at $50,000.
