A busy weekend for area sports culminated Saturday evening with Central Kitsap football advancing to the Class 4A state tournament for the second consecutive year.

Howie McDonald rushed for a school record 391 yards as well as five touchdowns to lead CK past Snohomish 49-13 in the state preliminary round.

With four touchdown runs of 20 yards or more, including 71- and 62-yard bursts, McDonald’s performance catapulted CK to the school’s first ever back-to-back state berth.

The Cougars (7-3) face No. 2-ranked Olympia (10-0) at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the first round of the state tournament, with the game being played at Ingersoll Stadium in Olympia.

Olympia is allowing just 5.5 points per game (55 total) and has posted five shutouts on the season, meaning CK will need another big-time McDonald performance if it’s going to advance.

The Bears won every regular season game by at least 30 points after 21-7 and 7-0 wins against Gig Harbor and Capital, respectively, to begin the season.

The CK-Olympia winner faces either Rogers (Puyallup) or Skyview in the quarterfinals.

Olympic, on the other hand, was overmatched against Lakes (10-0) in 3A preliminary action Friday, losing 44-7. The Trojans (4-6) failed to score before the fourth quarter and weren’t able to stop the Lancer offense, which erupted for 21 second-quarter points after a scoreless first quarter.

Jamaal Kearse, brother of UW wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, scored on 9-, 24 and 46-yard touchdown receptions to lead Lakes.

Oly volleyball alive, barely

A two-game split in opening round matches Saturday means Olympic volleyball will play at least one more loser-out match in the Class 3A West Central District volleyball tournament at the Fairgrounds’ Pavilion.

Olympic was swept by Lakes 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20) in the first round, but later salvaged a 3-1 win against Evergreen in a loser-out match to stay alive.

The Lady Trojans face Kennedy (18-2) at 10 a.m. Nov. 15., with the winner advancing to play either Capital or Camas in a loser-out, winner-to-state match.

Meanwhile, Central Kitsap’s volleyball season ended Friday after back-to-back losses to begin the Class 4A West Central District volleyball tournament, also played at the Fairgrounds.

The Lady Cougars opened against Puyallup, losing 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-16), and weren’t able to rebound in a loser-out match against Auburn-Riverside, again falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-17).

Oly girls soccer advances to state

Coach Steve Haggerty’s team is in the Class 3A state tournament yet again after a 3-0 win against Hazen Saturday.

Ali Brown had two goals and an assist to lead the Lady Trojans, who host a first-round state match against Shadle Park at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Silverdale Stadium.

Audrey Pond also scored, while goalkeeper Darrien Dorr posted her eighth consecutive shutout.

The Klahowya Lady Eagles, however, were eliminated from postseason play Saturday, losing 1-0 to Steilacoom.

Lydia Keith’s 77th-minute goal was the difference.
