Child car seat check: Make sure that the children riding with you are traveling as safely as possible by attending our monthly car seat check. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Saturday of each month at our headquarters station near Kingston. In May, come and see us on the 14th!
Smart phone application can help save lives: Now available in Kitsap County, the Pulse Point smart phone application alerts registered users trained in the use of CPR and AED that their help is needed when a cardiac arrest is reported near your location. Make sure you’ve got two ways out of EVERY ROOM: Two incidents during the month of April underscored the importance of escape planning and, especially, ensuring that there are at least two ways out of every room.
Every fall, we present an escape-planning contest in partnership with local schools. We see many plans returned that show two ways of out of the house, but fail to show two ways out of every room.
In mid-April, our crews responded to a fast-moving fire on the main floor of a multilevel home. The house had four exits on the main floor but the two occupants were on an upper level, with their way blocked entirely by acrid smoke.
Thankfully, they had alternate exits from their room and were able to escape uninjured with their pets.
Earlier in the month, fire crews in Spokane had to cut through a wall to reach and rescue a teen whose only exit from a basement was blocked by fire. The home had multiple exits but the basement did not.
Especially in sleeping areas, make sure you and your family have at least two ways out in case one way is blocked.
