KINGSTON — Martha Rabura, a junior at Kingston High School and candidate for the highest rank in Girl Scouts, is starting a library at Mallory Jansen Memorial School in Banta, Sierra Leone.
The school was founded by Children of the Nations, a non-profit based in Poulsbo.
The school is an approved educational facility recognized by Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Education, and offers preschool and primary school education. A second Mallory Jansen Memorial School is located in Marjay Town.
Rabura’s goal is to collect 2,400 books and raise $1,800 .
Wanted: New or gently used children’s fiction, children’s non-fiction, children’s novels (through fourth-grade reading level), and picture books; children’s reference books, including maps, atlases, dictionaries, and Bibles published since 2000; and Nooks and Kindles.
Not wanted: Books containing violence, witchcraft, ghosts, American pop culture, or lots of romance.
Rabura has established several ways to support the cause.
— Drop off donated books at local elementary schools, Kingston High School, Kingston Community Center, Poulsbo Library, and Liberty Bay Books in downtown Poulsbo.
— On March 14, there will be a Bookfair at Barnes & Noble in Silverdale. Fifteen percent of the profits made from all purchases at the store that day, or online until March 19, using the Bookfair I.D. number (11569639) will help support the library.
— Order a cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory during the bookfair. Call Barnes & Noble manager Tiana, 360-698-0945 between now and March 14; remember to use the Bookfair I.D. number, 11569639.
“With your help, we will give children one of the most powerful tools — books,” Rabura wrote. “Please help make a difference in the lives of children. There is no gift like literacy.”
