School board seeks policy governance input
The North Kitsap School Board would like to hear from parents and community members about a new form of management under consideration called policy governance. The policy governance model clarifies the responsibilities of the Board and Superintendent Rick Jones. NKHS students graduate from aerospace program
North Kitsap High School students Simone Maule and Alison Marks graduated this month from the Washington Aerospace Scholars Summer Residency program at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Maule and Marks were among 150 students from across the state who qualified for the program. The students spent six months studying a NASA-designed, distance-learning curriculum via the Internet prior to the residency. During the residency, they collaborated with other students to design a human mission to Mars and complete hands-on engineering challenges. The Washington Aerospace Scholars program is accepting applications through Nov. 6 for the 2009-10 cycle. The program is open to high school juniors with a grade point average of 3.0 and above. Local students named to WSU President’s Honor Roll
The following students were named to the President’s Honor Roll for summer 2009 at Washington State University. To earn a spot on the list, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.75 in at least nine graded hours in a single term at WSU or a GPA of 3.5 based on at least 15 cumulative hours of graded work.
The students are: Matthew Keller of Kingston, Laura Beck, Erica Ditmer, Stepan Vladimirovich Eero, Yuriy Vladimirovich Eero, Jeannie Paulson and Jessica Robocker of Poulsbo.
Leonard, Larson among National Merit semifinalists
Sophia Leonard of North Kitsap High School and Avery Larson of Kingston High were named semifinalists this week in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship competition. Of the 29,403 National Merit Program participants in Washington State, 317 were named semifinalists in the competition. Semifinalists qualified for consideration by scoring high on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2008.
NKHS band boosters host rummage sale
The North Kitsap High band boosters are holding a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at St. Charles Anglican Church in Poulsbo. The church is located near Central Market, at the corner of Highway 305 and Forest Rock Lane.
North Kitsap and Kingston hold SAT prep classes
North Kitsap and Kingston high schools will host a practice SAT from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Sept. 19 in rooms 107 and 108 at NKHS. Cost for the test is $25 and includes a “scores back” session for students and parents from 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 24. SAT prep courses will be held at the high schools during each school’s morning tutorial time, from Sept. 23-Nov. 19. Cost for the full course is $150. Info: call Mark Kluth at (360) 598-8402.
OC announces changes to manufacturing tech. program
Olympic College announced this week that students may now begin the college’s manufacturing technology program during any quarter, including fall quarter.
