KINGSTON — The Klahowya Eagles were looking for their seventh win to stay undefeated in the Olympic League Oct. 16. Sarah Holt and the Kingston High School Buccaneers had other plans.

In the 63rd minute of the game, Holt scored the sole goal of the game to win it for the Bucs during the home game.

Kingston coach Craig Smith said the Bucs were able to frustrate the Eagles by playing more counter-defense. The Bucs allowed the Eagles to play more in the center, and even partially on the Bucs’ side of the field, Smith said. With more defenders the Bucs were able to create protect the goal while opening up a few chances on offense.

“The longer the game went on, the more frustrated they [Eagles] got,” Smith said. “That fueled our fire.”

The game plan paid off. Holt, a senior, shot a goal that Smith said was outside the penalty box. He estimates the shot was from about 25-yards out. The ball, Smith said, dropped before crossing the goal line into the bottom-right corner, just inside the post. Six-inches higher and the goalie would have stopped it, Smith said.

The win over the Eagles means more than beating the only — previous — undefeated team in the League. It also puts the Bucs within two points of the North Kitsap Vikings.

Klahowya leads the League (6-1-0) with 18 points. The Vikings (6-1-0) have 15 points. The Bucs (4-2-0) have 13 points. The Olympic Trojans (4-2-0) are in a close fourth with 12 points.

There are two games remaining in the regular season. Depending on the outcome of the Bucs’ Thursday (Oct. 18) game against North Mason, and the Viking’s game against Port Angeles (Oct. 18), the two north end teams could be battling each other for second place in the League.

The Bucs and Vikings play each other in the last game before the post season, Oct. 23 at Buc Field. Game is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.

North Kitsap coach Chris may expects the game against Kingston to be low-scoring. Both teams have good defense, he said.

The Vikings, who defeated the Bremerton Knights 4-0 Oct. 16, are on a winning-streak. The team defeated Port Townsend 4-0, Oct. 11 — the team also raised $750 for cancer research.

The Bucs have never won against the Vikings in soccer — girls or boys.

“North [Kitsap] is always prepared,” Smith said. “They should be confident, because they have never lost to us.”

North Mason (1-5-0), is second-to-the-last in the League. The team has three points over Bremerton’s zero. The Bucs travel to North Mason for a 6:45 p.m. game.

As for the Viking’s Port Angeles game, prior to playing the Bucs, May said the team will have the home advantage. The game probably won’t be a blowout, however, as its senior night and players will not all be playing their normal positions — all seniors play during senior night. Port Angeles’ record is 3-3-0.
