BREMERTON – Capt. John Ring, Commanding Officer, USS Nimitz, will be the guest speaker at Naval Base Kitsap’s (NBK) annual commemoration of the Battle of Midway at 9 a.m., Friday, June 3.
The Battle of Midway is regarded as one of the Navy’s and the nation’s most historically significant naval victories. The battle raged June 4-7, 1942, and changed the tide of the war in the Pacific and the course of world history. Because of the victory, Japanese forces were prevented from capturing strategically significant Midway Island thus marking the dawn of the U.S. Navy’s global prominence and the coming of age of carrier aviation. Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet, directed the fleet with strategies and intelligence to this victory.
To remember and honor the sacrifices of those who participated, a wreath laying ceremony will be conducted. Additionally, Navy Band Northwest will provide music for the event, which will take place on Pier Charlie at NBK-Bremerton.
Anyone with base access is welcome to attend the event. World War II veterans who would like to attend the ceremony are asked to call 360-627-4030 for more information.
