Whaling Days is a celebration of our community’s relationship to the water — and a celebration of our relationship to each other.

Although Silverdale is unincorporated and a county retail center, and despite a population that has ballooned from 7,600 to 19,200 since 1990, residents have managed to maintain this place as a distinct community with small-town charm. Among those charms: Old Town Silverdale, with heritage buildings dating to the late 1800s; Waterfront Park, on Dyes Inlet; Clear Creek Trail, which winds through wetlands, woodlands and tidelands; the Clear Creek Interpretive Center, which reminds us of our responsibility to be good caretakers of the environment that sustains us; and Whaling Days, which brings us together for three days of celebration.

On these days, you’re not just a neighbor. You’re family, participating in an important — and very fun — local tradition.

Whaling Days is July 29, 30 and 31 at Waterfront Park. The fun begins at 5 p.m. July 29 with the carnival, live music and, at 10 p.m., fireworks over Dyes Inlet.

The Silverdale Rotary Pancake Breakfast is 7-11 a.m. July 30. The Meals on Wheels Kitsap Whale of a Run also begins at 7. The First Federal Lions/Kiwanis Grand Parade begins at 10.

On July 31, the canoe races begin at 9 a.m.; the Silverdale Rotary Duck Race begins at 1:30 p.m. Live music and the street fair continue through the weekend.
