The Buc Stops Here: February has come and gone

February has come and gone, semester one grades were mailed home and the third quarter began.

This month KHS held the Second Annual Pancake Breakfast which traditionally is held on the last day of school before winter break, but with the surprise of school cancelations due to snow, it was postponed until this month. The event is put on by the teachers of KHS who prepare and serve all the students pancakes. Classes are shortened and students come prepared to eat and relax that morning.

The day following the pancake breakfast was the ever-so-known holiday, Valentine’s Day. The day was filled with spending time with your sweetheart or if not with a sweetheart maybe with friends going to the movie “Confessions of a Shopaholic” that arrived in movie theaters the day before. I have to admit (me being quite a shopper) it was a great movie to see with friends.

We are moving into yet another sports season and the update for winter sports is: girl’s basketball team still has a chance of getting to the championships again, boy’s basketball is definitely coming back, and swimming and wrestling are also doing a great job. Gymnastics went to districts this month. Congratulations to Dana VanWyck and Tori Gerkin for making it that far.

Spring sports consist of: boy’s soccer, girls golf, boy’s golf, girl’s tennis, track, baseball, and fast pitch. Try-outs begin early in March (dates depending on sport). We wish the best of luck to every student going out for a sport.

Speaking of sports, we are still raising money for field lights. There was a school board meeting held this month and I spoke with a student who had attended the meeting. I asked Sam Shoemaker what they had discussed during the meeting and what the boards reply to them was. He says, “Basically we had to make it clear that we did not want a stadium, we wanted lights. They didn’t have anything against lights, but it felt like they thought we were leaning more toward a stadium when all we are asking for is lights for our field.”

A field-lights fundraising event we are doing involves using your Albertsons Preferred Savings Card. For each purchase made with a card a percentage of the total will be donated to the field-lights fund. You can join today by logging online to www.albertsons.com and click on the shopper’s link. Once you log in, click on “Sign me up.”

Seniors continue to submit college applications to schools both close to home and far away. As a new tradition for this column (until the end of June) I will be announcing one senior each month who has been accepted somewhere. The first senior I would like to announce is Chance Pruitt who will be attending Washington State University in the fall and will be majoring in business and marketing, congratulations Chance!
