KINGSTON — Elmer Arnold Martens, last surviving child of Petersburg, Alaska, pioneers Loui and Ragnhild Martens, died April 14 of natural causes with his family at his side.

He was 96.

Born in Petersburg, Alaska on May 23, 1916. Skippered tow boats on the Columbia River. Married Jacqueline in 1943. Purchased the Lorelei II and fished halibut and tuna until he retired.

Elmer and Jackie lived in Ballard until the early 1970s, when they moved to Kingston.

A life member of the Petersburg Elks, the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Nile Temple. Past commodore and life member of the Kingston Cove Yacht Club. Past president of the Fishing Vessel Owner’s Association.

Survived by his beloved wife, Jackie; daughters, Susan (Bill) Moses of Camano Island, and Laurie (Rich) Rasanen of Minot, N.D.; grandchildren, Mark (Andrea) Moses, Sally Moses, Ryan Rasanen, Julie Rasanen; four great granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents and siblings Magnus Martens, Thelma Martens Torwick Dorum and Leonard Martens. He is deeply missed.
