Businesses, volunteers help Kiwanis get students off to a good start | Kingston Kiwanis

As usual, our Kiwanis Club had a very productive month in August.

As usual, our Kiwanis Club had a very productive month in August.

The big emphasis has been working with other community groups in town to help children get ready for the school year, collecting school supplies and backpacks to make sure they are ready to learn.

Local volunteers gathered on Aug. 24 at Bayside Community Church to fill backpacks with all the pencils, crayons and other needed supplies for academic success. Thanks to all businesses and individuals and volunteers that helped collect and put these items together. Special thanks to the Windermere Foundation for its $1,000 donation for supplies.

We also had some great guest speakers in August that informed our members of what is happening in the Kingston and North Kitsap area. One such speaker was Nancy Langwith, a member of the Greater Kingston Economic Development Committee. The committee works to put Kingston on the map for local and outside investment. Nancy discussed plans for Kingston, Bainbridge Island, Kitsap County, and Tribal land to develop a “brand” that is designed to encourage tourism — emphasizing our beauty, outdoor attractions, marina facilities, casinos, and as a place to lay back and relax.

Addie Bodgan, a young woman representing Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS), gave a very enlightening presentation on what this national organization does.

I had never heard of MOPS and was very impressed with its mission. MOPS is a place where moms — expecting or with kids up through preschool  age — can build friendships, grow as a parent, and have a great time. Addie’s local MOPS group meets at Island Church on Bainbridge Island. Childcare is available on site so young mothers can concentrate on parenting skills and socializing with other mothers. MOPS’ contact number is 206-842-4288.

Kiwanis is also working with other local organizations to help Kitsap County with its hazardous waste collection project, scheduled for Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Park and Ride near Georges Corner on Hansville Road. Fliers will be distributed in the Kingston area that will spell out what items will be accepted for collection.

School starts this September, so remember to watch out for schoolchildren when driving.
