Some of the area’s top wrestlers will begin their quests to the state championships when the Olympic League tournament begins Saturday at Olympic High School.
Klahowya Secondary School, the Class 2A league champion out of the combined 3A/2A Olympic League, has a slew of grapplers who coach Wayne Gizzi believes are state-caliber athletes.
Neil Sell and Joe Sawyers lead that group, and both are returning state competitors and expected to be at the Tacoma Dome next month competing for state titles.
Sell and Sawyers are captains, two of the four seniors on the squad, and Gizzi has coached them since their freshmen seasons.
“I’d like to see them go out on a high note,” Gizzi said.
The season has been a smashing success for the Eagles, who are undefeated in league meets and secured their first-ever Battle of the Bay trophy last month when they defeated rivals Olympic High School and Central Kitsap High School.
But the job isn’t complete, and Gizzi expects big things during the postseason.
“If the guys continue to work hard and do what we’ve taught them, then we’re going to do really well, I think.”
Gizzi believes the team is capable of finishing in the top five at the state championships, but he would not go as far to say they would win the championship.
“It just depends on the day,” he said.
Olympic’s Branden Yeik, who placed second at state last season in the 140-pound weight division, is 27-0 this season and is one of the favorites to win a state championship.
