KINGSTON — Lynden Lions’ head coach Curt Kramme predicted two things for the game against the Kingston Buccaneers in the 2A State playoffs: the Lions would be there, and they would play hard.

The Lions did just that Nov. 15 at Civic Stadium, bringing the Buccaneers’ season to a halt with a 34-0 win.

The Lions advance to the quarterfinals of the playoffs against Sumner, Nov. 22.

The Bucs — the only team from the Olympic League to make state — are out.

Eight teams remain in contention for the 2A State Championship: Othello, Ellensburg, Tumwater, White River, Prosser, and Mark Morris. The Lions are the returning 2A champions.

Being shutout by the competition does not reflect the Buccaneers’ season. It became somewhat common for the Kingston Buccaneers to win big.

Except for the 37-30 loss to the North Kitsap Vikings, the Bucs outscored all their regular season competition by at least 18 points. The Bucs finished the regular season in second, behind the Vikings.

In the postseason, things slowed down for the Bucs when they defeated Franklin Pierce, 7-0. The close win in the 2A District tournament sent the Bucs to state for the second time in program history. The Bucs, however, will have to wait until next season to try again.
