Rangers distance track places 10th in Bellingham
The Olympic College distance track team is a work in progress.
Fielding a small roster, the Rangers struggled with their men’s and women’s distance track squads each placing 10th at the Ralph Vernacchia Team Classic April 8 at Western Washington University in Bellingham. A total of 11 men’s and 14 women’s schools competed in the track and field event.
However, Rachel Feiring and Jeremy Delicino each recorded qualifying times for the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship meet. Feiring finished 22nd in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:27.81, while Delicino placed ninth in the 10,000-meter in 33:40.9.
Meanwhile, Irene Moore scored 13th- and 5th-place finishes in the 400 dash and 400 hurdles, respectively. Moore, who is currently second on the league championship qualifying list for the 3,000 steeplechase, ended the event in seventh place with a time of 13:17. Andrew Crock led the men’s team with a season-best in the 1,500, finishing 16th in 4:13.86.
Travis Thomas made his debut in the long jump, finishing eighth for the Rangers. He also placed fourth in the triple jump.
Brenden Schruhl, the son of head coach Daryl Schruhl, ran in the 3,000 steeplechase for the first time this season and qualified eighth for the league title meet with a time of 10:45.02. The teams’ next event is the Lewis and Clark Invite Saturday, April 16 in Portland, Ore.
Klahowya girls lacrosse remains undefeated
The Klahowya Secondary School girls lacrosse team defeated Forest Ridge School (Bellevue) 15-6 at Central Kitsap Junior High School April 11. The match was a non-league contest.
Ruthie Hawley led the Eagles with four goals, while Sammy Borson, Jessica Haga, Jacky Hennegan, Katie Smiley and Rocki Winkler totaled two goals apiece. Smiley also finished with a team-high of four assists. The Eagles improved to 6-0.
Olympic fastpitch loses to Sequim
The Olympic High School fastpitch team lost to Sequim High School 14-1 at home April 12.
The Trojans started this week with two straight losses, including a 7-5 defeat to Kingston High School April 11.
Sequim overpowered Olympic with 15 hits and a five-run first inning to jump ahead early. The Trojans committed seven errors and collected two hits off the Wolves’ pitchers.
Jamie Barry hit 1-for-3 with a triple and Brooke Bird also went 1-for-3 for Olympic.
The Trojans, led by head coach Dusty Anchors, have Olympic League games against Port Townsend and North Mason high schools this week, barring a possible rain postponement.
ISPN Sports to recap Rangers
Kevin Mac will broadcast live coverage of the ISPN Sports Show from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday with highlights and interviews from the past week of high school sports on www.ispnsports.com. Mac will also feature Olympic College athletics.
The show will include highlights and interviews from Rangers players and coaches.
The network is scheduled to broadcast Olympic College’s baseball game against Shoreline Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16.
Rangers baseball ends skid
The Olympic College baseball team split its first league series of the season last weekend against Skagit Valley College. The Rangers won the second and third games, 12-7 and 6-2, respectively.
Skagit Valley won the opener 4-3 and wrapped up the series with a 7-5 victory.
The Rangers improved to 2-4 in league play, 5-13 overall after the four-game slate. Skagit Valley enters their bye week with a 2-6 league record and 9-12 mark for the regular season.
Central Kitsap High School graduate Allen Hewey went 7-for-13 with a home run, two doubles and nine RBI in the series. Hewey is hitting .353 for Olympic College this season.
The team’s next game is versus Shoreline Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16.
Former CK grad enters record books for Vikings
Western Washington University pitcher and former Central Kitsap High School standout Erika Quint recorded her 20th win April 10, becoming the first to reach the feat in school history.
Quint totaled 10 strikeouts in a complete-game 7-2 win versus Montana State University. She is 20-1 with a 1.26 ERA and 14 complete games this season. Opposing batters are hitting .175 off Quint.
Despite the win, the Vikings dropped to 27-7 after losing two of three in the weekend tripleheader.
Quint, who also pitched for Olympic College, currently holds Western Washington’s single-season strikeout record with 197, eclipsing her sister Jackie Quint, who previously held the mark.
Kitsap Pumas tickets on sale
The Kitsap Pumas soccer club is now selling individual match tickets for the 2011 regular season, the team announced Tuesday.
Fans can also purchase tickets for the first international friendly match versus England’s Port Vale. The team will return to Bremerton’s Memorial Stadium for all of its home games this season. A total of 16 matches are on the slate for the outdoor team. Prices remain the same from 2010, but the age cut-off for youth tickets have changed.
Seniors, adults and teens ages 16 and older can buy a ticket for $10. Youth ages 4 to 15 are admitted for $5, while children under age 4 can attend single games for free.

Former Olympic grad earns honors
Athena Rosario, a junior third baseman for William Penn University (Iowa) and former Olympic High School graduate, was named Midwest Collegiate Conference player of the week March 21.
Rosario went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs in the school’s 11-1 victory over Bellevue College. The Bremerton native also played softball for Olympic College.
OC softball sweeps Skagit
The Olympic College softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Skagit Valley College April 5. Sophomore Lexi Orteza, an Olympic High School graduate, led the Rangers with four stolen bases and two RBI in the opening 8-0 win. She also went 2-for-3.
Olympic College defeated the Cardinals 22-5 in the second game. Orteza went 3-for-3 with a three-run triple, two singles and two bases-loaded walks.
She finished the doubleheader with 10 RBI. Pitchers Jillian Stewart and Corinne Kleeberger each earned victories for the Rangers.
Smith, Becke top Ladies Club
The Gold Mountain Ladies Golf Club competed in its limited clubs play April 12 with Terri Smith and Bonnie Becke leading their respective divisions.
In Division I, Smith finished with a score of 75, and Cindy Garfein ended with a 77. Becke won the Division II round with a score of 76. Penny Swan (77) and Jill Granquist (86) finished second and third, respectively.
NK tops Knights
The North Kitsap High School girls tennis team defeated Bremerton High School 4-3 April 11. North Kitsap won the four doubles matches, while the Knights won the three singles matches. Breanna Casias, Megan Arriolla and Ashley Chidester led the Knights in their singles bouts. Meanwhile, the Vikings earned victories by pairs Kelsey Grunigen-Bryana Bohl, Ana Yee-Sarah Farmer, Julia Hoak-Stephanie Bird and Maegan McClanahan-Talia Frombach.
