The Central Kitsap School District recalled 13 teachers last month, bringing back educators who in April thought they lost their jobs.

The district laid off the 13 teachers to offset a $3.4 million budget deficit at the end of April in order to meet a May 15 deadline to give notice to those whose jobs will not be renewed, spokesman David Beil said. Since then, others throughout the district have retired, allowing the laid off teachers to be invited back. While one of the teachers found a new job, 12 will return to the classroom.

Fall enrollment numbers will determine whether a new teacher will need to be hired for the 13th position, Beil said.

The layoffs were an effort to save the district about $1 million. Other cuts will come in the form of reduced hours for administrators and classified staff, reduction of the library programs and energy savings, said David McVicker, executive director of the Business Department.

The Central Kitsap School District Board of Directors will vote on a final budget at its Aug. 25 meeting.
