Winter sea life exploration and pier peer

BROWNSVILLE – Join Kitsap Beach Naturalists at the Brownsville Marina to explore winter’s dark waters to find what’s covering the docks and pilings. Bring a flashlight and have a look at how spectacular creatures look when illuminated at night.

The pier peer sea life exploration event will be 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at the Brownsville Marina, 9790 Ogle Rd NE, in Central Kitsap.

Silverdale featured on ‘Neighborhoods’ show

SILVERDALE – “Neighborhoods,” a monthly Comcast television program that highlights a community in Western Washington, featured a few shops and attractions in Silverdale area in a recent episode. A small film crew visited the Port of Silverdale, Monica’s Waterfront Bakery, Lisa Stirrett’s Glass Art Studio, Silver City Restaurant, Cash Brewing Co. and Clear Creek Trail in August. Snowman swim meet Jan. 16

The Bremerton YMCA Swim Team’s third annual Snowman Invitational is Jan. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Bremerton YMCA. Swimmers ages 5-18 representing various YMCA’s and club teams from throughout the Greater Puget Sound Area will be competing at the Glenn Jarstad Aquatic Center. The Bremerton YMCA Swim Team hosts approximately 6-8 swim meets a year, but this has been the most popular and usually draws about 400-500 people. The Snowman Invitational has been especially popular because it fields good competition, maintains meet records and often draws many former alumni of the Bremerton YMCA Swim Team.

Free business training orientation Jan. 22-23

BREMERTON – A training program for those interested in learning how to run their own business will kick off with a a free orientation in Bremerton Jan. 23. There is also a Poulsbo orientation Jan. 22.

The “Get Ready For Business” orientations are sponsored by the Business Education Support Training program, or BE$T.

The first orientation is 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at the Poulsbo City Hall (200 NE Moe Street) and the second orientation is 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Kitsap Community Resources in Bremerton (845 8th Street.)

“The free orientation is offered to would-be entrepreneurs to help them determine if this is time to start a business of their own and to help those with an existing business to build a better foundation,” said Dayna Ebersole, BE$T program manager.

The orientations serve as the entry point into an eight-week class being offered by BE$T.

Ridgetop Middle School Presents Central Kitsap Cheer Exhibition

SILVERDALE – The Central Kitsap Cheer Exhibition will take place at Ridgetop Middle School 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15. The exhibition will feature cheer teams from Fairview Middle School Stomp, Fairview Middle School Cheer, Ridgetop Middle School Cheer and Central Kitsap Middle School Cheer. Ridgetop Middle School is proud to host the Central Kitsap Cheer Exhibition for the first time. “This will be the first time all these fantastic teams will be together – not in competition, but in the spirit of how hard they work. Everyone will be able to showcase their routines and learn from each other,” said Athletic Director, Steve Lee.

Admission to the event is free and refreshments will be provided. Ridgetop Middle School is located at 10600 Hillsboro Dr. NW, in Silverdale.

Goheen earns master’s

OXFORD, Ohio – Bremerton resident Teresa Goheen has earned a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in the Biological Sciences from Miami University with coursework through Project Dragonfly and Woodland Park Zoo. Since being accepted to the Advanced Inquiry Program master’s degree in 2013, Goheen has explored conservation and education in Belize, while also conducting projects that have made a difference in the Bremerton area. Goheen is a teacher at Montessori at West Hills STEM Academy.

Students make EWU dean’s list

Several Bremerton and Silverdale students earned a spot on the dean’s list at Eastern Washington University for fall 2015. The Bremerton students are: Rachielle Abrigo, Kendall Beardsley, Erin Daniels, Danielle Evert, Isaiah Irish, Leah Straub, Candace Jae Madriaga and Ashli Payne.

Silverdale students who made the list are: Isaiah Tanksley, Myranda Stout, China Kesterson, Alleson Castro and Alexis Wesley.

Listort on Columbia College dean’s list

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Daniel V Listort, of Silverdale, was named to the Columbia College’s Marysville Campus dean’s list for the August-October and October-December 2015 sessions. To be named to the list a student must have completed 12 semester hours in a 16-week period and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a four-point scale.

Racial justice talks at Agnus Dei church

GIG HARBOR – From Jan. 21-23 Agnus Dei Lutheran Church will be a partner site when a leading group of activists, scholars, authors, artists and experts on racial inequality come together to hold life-giving conversations on the racial issues of our time, including structural racism, mass incarceration, and policy change at Trinity Institute’s 45th National Theological Conference, “Listen for a Change: Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice.”

Classes teach about Kitsap streams

BREMERTON – WSU Kitsap Extension and its partners present an exciting and informative five-week class and field training all about local streams.

The class is intended for those who want to learn about and explore forests and streams. On the Kitsap Peninsula, beautiful forests and small streams abound, making it the ideal place to learn about native plants, forests, wetlands, aquatic insects, and more. The classes also discuss human interaction with these resources and their protection, conservation, and restoration. The classes involve lots of time exploring outdoors.

The classes are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 28 through Feb. 25. Classes meet at room 406 in the Norm Dicks Government Center, in Bremerton. The cost is $45, which includes class materials. Scholarships are available. Those who complete the training and volunteer 25 hours will earn a WSU Stream Stewards certificate of completion, hat, and name badge.

Meditation class starts Jan. 20

SILVERDALE – A six week “mindfulness meditation” class will meet over six Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 20-Feb. 24. Meditation can help bring calm and clarity to the pressures of daily life and has been proven to reduce stress. The fee for the class is $175. Info session on CKSD bond and levy

Central Kitsap School District will hold an information session about bond and levy measures on the Feb. 9 ballot.

CKSD invites the public to ask questions and learn more about the capital projects bond, which will make all schools safer and will fund maintenance and construction costs, and a replacement school support levy to help fund day-to-day operations.  The session is 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Olympic High School. 134 artists featured in annual CVG show

BREMERTON – High quality and great diversity characterize both the artists and artwork included in Collective Visions Gallery’s ninth annual state-wide juried art show. 271 artists from 79 towns and cities from every corner of Washington State submitted more than 850 pieces for consideration. The competition, known as The CVG Show, is one of the largest art competitions in the Northwest with more than $10,000 in cash.

The show is open to the public Jan. 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on opening day. The exhibit continues until Saturday, Feb. 28. Gallery hours are Wednesday–Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 12-4 p.m. An awards ceremony for the artists and sponsors and guests will take place the evening of the 23rd in Bremerton’s elegant Admiral Theatre. Free balcony seating is available for those wishing to attend the awards ceremony and juror’s lecture which will take place 6-7:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:45pm).  Collective Visions Gallery is located at 331 Pacific Ave. in Bremerton. Severe weather shelters open in cold weather

KITSAP – Due to freezing temperatures, the Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management often activates their Severe Weather Shelter Plan.

One shelter is located at The Salvation Army, 832 6th St., in Bremerton. The second shelter is the Kingston Community Center, 1212 NE State Highway 104, in Kingston.

When they’re open, the shelters’ hours of operation are 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. Guests are not able to check into the shelter after 9 p.m.

The severe weather shelters serve all citizens in our area who require safe overnight refuge where none is available. Activations will be weather dependent. For more information call 211 or Kitsap County Emergency Management at 360-307-5871.
