The rain clouds parted Saturday and hundreds of children learned valuable safety tips at the 23rd annual Kids’ Day.

Parents and children of all ages attended Kids’ Day at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds this weekend. Jean Wynn, of Silverdale, brought her three grandchildren to their first-ever Kids’ Day.

“This is our first year. It’s the first time I heard about it,” Wynn said.

Wynn heard about Kids’ Day from a co-worker at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and decided to take her 12-year-old, 10-year-old and 8-year-old grandchildren to the event.

Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue (CKFR), in conjunction with local organizations and businesses, hosted Kids’ Day. The all-day event included live fire demonstrations and vehicle extrications performed by local firefighters. The Ride and Glide Stunt Team also performed daring bicycle tricks and spread a message about safety.

CKFR Chief Ken Burdette participated in Saturday’s festivities and was pleased with the turnout.

“It’s been pretty steady since we opened,” Burdette said. “I think everybody’s having a good time and that’s what it’s all about.”

Children got to climb aboard CKFR and Bremerton Fire Department engines and medic units as well as check out a Kitsap Transit bus, the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad vehicle and a boat from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.

More than 45 booths set up inside the President’s Hall to dish out important health and safety tips. Children learned how to properly use a fire extinguisher inside the President’s Hall before they were able to test their skills, with help from seasoned firefighters, on a controlled blaze outside the building.

“I think it’s pretty nice. I think some things really make the kids think,” Wynn said.

Wynn’s 8-year-old granddaughter, Erin, a Green Mountain Elementary School student, said she enjoyed her first Kids’ Day and learned a few important safety lessons along the way.

“How when there’s a fire you stop, drop and roll and when there’s a fire in your house you call 911,” Erin said.

Wynn said her grandchildren already knew some of the safety tips, but local firefighters and personnel further reinforced what they already knew, making for a good learning experience.

“It was good for them to have reinforcement for those things,” Wynn said.

Erin said she enjoyed Kids’ Day and eagerly responded when asked if she wanted to attend next year’s event.

“Yes, I want to come back,” she said with a smile.
