TACOMA — It was Central Kitsap versus Central Kitsap, Sugimoto versus Sugimoto.
After Central Kitsap girls tennis singles leaders Aya Sugimoto and Corinne Wurden joined forces, they proved too much for the Narrows League, topping Bellarmine’s Nell Shonnard and Julia Galbraith for the Narrows League doubles title.
Now, with Aya and Wurden assuming the No. 1 spot to districts, they’ll meet the most familiar of foes: CK teammates Katherine (unrelated) and Sachi Sugimoto (Aya’s sister).
Aya and Wurden easily breezed through the first two rounds, surrendering just a single set in advancing to the 4A West Central District Doubles Tournament semifinals. Now they’ll battle Katherine and Sachi, who also won their first two matches convincingly, 6-1, 7-5 against a Jefferson duo and 6-1, 6-2 against a pairing from Puyallup.
While that match took place yesterday, results were unavailable at press time. Regardless of the outcome, both teams will advance to state with at least the No. 5 seed. The other will play today for the title at Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma.
CK’s Nicole Morrison and Aimee Rozier, making up the third doubles pairing for the Cougs, won their first-round match but fell 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 to Kentridge. Now in consolation, they’ll battle to enter state as the No. 4, 6 or 7 seed.
Klahowya also did well last weekend, with Shelby Hunter and Jessica Wilson sweeping the top seeds into districts. Hunter beat Wilson at sub-districts to earn the top seed. The Eagles also claimed the top sub-district doubles team, with Misty Noster and Katie Stephens taking the top spot.
Track & Field
With the top four in each event moving on from last weekend’s 2A Sub-District Track & Field meet, the Klahowya Eagles advanced several to districts today at Mount Tahoma.
Rebecca Lindgren won the girls 100-meter run with a time of 12.85 seconds, also taking the 400 with a time of 1:01.15. She also advances in the 200. Jes Cantu (800), Sierra Cook (1,600), Brittany Corley (110 HH) and Sharon Cox (long jump, triple jump) also advanced.
On the boys side, Randy Schmittler found himself atop the podium in the 300 hurdles thanks to his 42.40 time. He also advanced in the 200, javelin and discus. Cody Shaputis (100, 200), Tim Fuller (100), Noah Caffrey (1,600), Jacob Blattman (high jump) and both the boys and girls 1,600 relays also made it.
