School Board will appoint District 3 director Sept. 27

Also on the board's agenda: review of first animal policy in the classroom.

POULSBO — A new District 3 director is expected to be appointed to the North Kitsap School Board Sept. 27.

The appointment, which board president Dan Weedin said would be made at the scheduled meeting, will fill the position left vacant by Kathleen Dassel. Dassel resigned from the District 3 position Aug. 23.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m., following a study session on the new TPEP teacher/principal evaluation system.

The four remaining board members interviewed four candidates for the vacant position during a special board meeting Sept. 19.

The person selected will server the remainder of Dassel’s term, which expires December 2013.

Board to review first classroom animal policy

The North Kitsap School District’s first classroom animal policy will be reviewed during the next board meeting Sept. 27.

The policy draft, which can be found on the district’s website, lays out specific guidelines as to when animals will be allowed in the classroom.

The policy draft is not on the list of action items, which means no decision is expected to be made during the meeting.

According to the policy draft, prior to granting or denying the inclusion of an animal in a classroom, principals will evaluate the following:

— There is an educational benefit to including an animal in the instructional program.

— There is an appropriate plan for animal control.

— Health concerns have been addressed (allergies, etc…)

— The animal’s health and safety are evaluated.

— Sanitary issues have been addressed.
