NAVFAC (Naval Facilities Engineering Command) Northwest announced Ray Akins was selected as the Robert V. Ronick – Navy Fleet Manager of the Year for 2012.
“Ray is a hardworking individual that takes on projects others walk away from. In the course of his short time here, he saved the Navy and the taxpayer approximately $1.6 million dollars by reducing the Navy’s vehicle and equipment fleet, while still accomplishing the mission to our supported commanders. It is quite an honor to be selected for this award,” said Capt. Chris LaPlatney commanding officer for NAVFAC Northwest.
Taking care of the Navy’s vehicle and equipment pool is nothing new for Akins. It’s a family affair. Akins is a third generation transportation worker and has worked in the industry for more than 16 years. As a Seabee, Akins took care of the Navy’s vehicles and equipment from California to Europe, from snowmobiles to buses, and forklifts to cranes. Akins is passionate about alternative fuels and what their increased use means to the Navy. His efforts include bringing alternative fuels to the regions naval installations, and his efforts have resulted in a 300 percent increase in alternative fuels usage and a 50 percent decrease in petroleum usage. Because of his efforts, an additional $1.5 million was provided for Northwest Regional alternative fuel projects in fiscal year 2012.
Increasing the use of electric vehicles is also in Akins view for the Navy in the Pacific Northwest. He is increasing electrical infrastructure capability at Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton and Naval Station Everett to support a larger fleet of electric vehicles and exchanging on-base petroleum fueled vehicles with electric vehicles through the General Services Administration’s normal rotation.
The Robert V. Ronick Navy Fleet Manager of the Year Award was named after the Navy Fleet Manager in Youkouska Japan who died in 2003. This recognition is presented annually to Navy fleet managers who embody the skills, professionalism, and “Can-Do” attitude required for excellence in fleet management.
