PORT ORCHARD — Two Bremerton men charged in the murder of Kingston’s Richard Hugh Jones Jr. made their first appearance in Kitsap County Superior Court Monday.

David Robert Adams, 23, of Bremerton pleaded not guilty to first-degree, premeditated murder. Adams’ bail was set at $500,000.

Jones, a 74-year-old Korean war veteran, was best known for his love of music and selfless volunteerism.

Arraignment for Jesus Castro De Juan, 29, of Bremerton for murder and rendering criminal assistance was postponed until Friday.

After Adams was escorted out of the coutroom, his mother Cherry Corleone was consoled by a friend.

“I’m sorry any of this happened,” Corleone said, following her son’s arraignment. “I didn’t ask for any of this.”

Sue Hannah, elder coordinator for the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, said Jones will be missed by the elders of both the S’Klallam and the Suquamish tribes.

“He came to all our functions,” she said. “It’s just so hard because he just wanted to help people.”

Adams lived with Jones at Jones’ home on Resource Ridge Drive NW in Kingston for several weeks, said Kitsap County Sheriff spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson in a statement released last week.

Adams and De Juan were arrested at about 10:30 p.m. Friday at a Greyhound Bus terminal in Tacoma. The men were returning from California at the request of deputies.

According to documents, Adams stated Jones told the two men he would leave them a substantial amount of money when he died. Court documents also state the two used Jones’ credit cards that weekend to finance their trip to California. The two attempted to purchase plane tickets to Guam but an Internet travel agency denied the purchase.

Adams allegedly told deputies he and De Juan started planning Jones’ death July 26, the day Jones was murdered.

According to the report, one of the reasons Adams gave was “greed.”

Jones, who was a boxer, had a padded boxing area in his home. According to court documents, Adams invited Jones to box that night.

After wrestling for approximately 30 minutes, Adams allegedly put Jones in a choke hold and strangled him, later asking De Juan to stab him to “make sure he was dead.”

Court records state Adams said that was how he planned to kill Jones.

Kitsap County Sheriff deputies found the body hidden in a bedroom closet on July 30. Neighbors called police to check on Jones because they hadn’t seen him for several days.
