Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. But, the most remarkable thing about Tuesday is how unremarkable it was.
The first legal sale of recreational marijuana in Washington state may have taken place in Seattle, but the buds were grown right here in Kitsap County.
Bremerton’s Nine Point Growth Industries supplied Seattle’s Cannabis City with the product and the media firestorm was very real. Reportedly, there were more print, radio and television journalists on hand than there were pot smokers.
The media circus was in town, but the protesters weren’t. No clergy, no sad/angry moms and dads, no gun-toting guys and gals, no flags burning, no NAACP. No nothing.
For folks who grew up under the shadow of “Reefer Madness,” Tuesday’s festivities were a head-scratcher. For others, who grew up in a time after diving under school desks during nuclear fallout drills was the norm, but before instant messaging, Tuesday was also a head-scratcher. The legal sale of marijuana was hard to believe. It was surreal.
But for members of Generation X and Y, the so called Millennials, Tuesday brought more of a shrug. Who cares and what’s the big deal, they seemed to say. Washington voters first approved medical marijuana in 1998. In the ensuing years, marijuana has become not only “acceptable,” but perfectly normal.
There’s no doubt that the state has a long way to go in this new experiment. We approved recreational marijuana the same day that Colorado voters did, but the Centennial State is leaps and bounds ahead of us. We’ve got some catching up to do, but one thing is clear: marijuana is here to stay.
And Tuesday’s big doings? Well, we’re more likely to remember a little bumblebee pollinating some tiny purple flowers while the sun dipped behind the Olympic Mountains as Wednesday quickly approached. It was groovy, man. And you didn’t even have to be stoned to enjoy the scene. For us, those sun-kissed seconds were the most memorable moments from an otherwise ordinary summer day. They were, in so many ways, the high points.
