A drunk man calling people racial slurs was arrested for assault and two counts of harassment March 23, stemming from an incident at a Silverdale tavern where he slapped a woman on the backside.

Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies were called to Our Place Tavern, 9322 Silverdale Way NW, at 12:32 a.m. after reports of the assault, according to reports.

The man, 32, a resident of Georgia and member of the Navy in Kitsap for training, had been described as acting obnoxious prior to the assault.

A 30-year-old woman, a resident of Florida, told a deputy she had talked briefly with the man during the night, but while she was taking a shot at a pool table, the suspect “smacked” her on the buttocks. When confronted by the woman, the man apologized. He was ordered to leave the bar. When he refused, the bartender sprayed him with water, the reports said.

While leaving the property, the suspect repeatedly called the woman and a man a racial slur and challenged them to a fight.

The deputy found the suspect at a nearby bar. He told deputies he had been living in Kitsap for six months training at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor and was scheduled to leave the next day. He was booked into the Kitsap County jail for investigation of fourth-degree assault and two counts of harassment.

When told the county had only one jail, in Port Orchard, the suspect “laughed and said that ‘this place is more backwoods than Georgia.'”
